Representation of Young People in a TV Drama

Gossip Girl is an American teen drama, set in the Upper West Side of New York. I've chosen to write about the way the show represents young people, because it is very different to how a British drama, e.g. Waterloo Road, presents them.
First of all, the storylines in this show are so overblown, its getting to the point of ridiculousness. But its all in the name of good tv. You watch characters break out of relationships and go to Paris to find love (awww!) with their best friends, one gets mugged for an engagement ring in Prague and is never to be seen again, and another finds out that her hot date turns out to be a French Prince. Yep, we've all been there.
You have to remember that all these young people are the sons or daughters of very, very rich people in the upper class, and that things like being accepted into university because of who your grandfather is, is quite normal for these people.
The plot plays on their social status and presents them as the stereotypical rich, spoilt daddy's girls or rebellious, moody young men who just want to go and have some fun in a high class brothel.
The mise en scene is important in this portrayal, as it is set in the very wealthy Upper East Side of New York, backdropped against old, prestigious private schools, and contemporary apartments alike. Some scenes are set in other countries, but always in picturesque tourist areas, e.g. Paris' Eiffel Tower, Hamptons Beach Resort. Whether the locations are soaked with sunshine or drizzled with perfect white snow, it is always shot in a way that keeps the actors looking young and unnaturally beautiful. So no thunderstorms here, thank you. To top it all off, the actors are dressed in made-to-measure, high fashion designer outfits, which not only keeps up the image of highly privileged young people, but has also made the show a big name in fashion, boasting wardrobes that are the envy of every fashion magazine editor.

TV Drama and Me

A drama isn't something I usually tune into when I'm watching TV. That being said, I keep up with quite a few TV Dramas, especially Gossip Girl, Prison Break, Waterloo Road and Misfits.
You'll notice its a mix of both American and British shows, and the British ones I watch tend to be about young people and their lives. I do get tired of seeing the same "stupid teenager that thinks they know everything" representation, which is why I enjoy seeing a more far-fetched depiction of teenage life in the American dramas.

I don't know what makes me want to watch these shows.

Its certainly not the easy-to-relate-to storylines, because I don't relate to any of them. That being said, it might be that its interesting to see a character's life which is so different to mine, or that these are weekly dramas, and each week, there's another mind-blowing cliffhanger to keep me on the edge of my seat until next week.

My Media Identity

My name is Yasmin Akhter and I am addicted. To the internet. Or bits of it. Like Facebook!

Even if I'm not actually doing anything on Facebook, it's pretty much left on all the time. But its always good for keeping up to date on things, like gossip, and raving to your friends about how amazing that episode of Gossip Girl was last night. It's the only social networking site I use; I've gone off MySpace and Twitter looks boring as hell.

You know what's not boring as hell?

Its pretty amazing. You can watch just about any kind of video on there, whatever mood you're in.

I generally use it for watching live performances from my favourite bands, Arctic Monkeys and Kings Of Leon to name a few, or repeatedly watching episodes of Never Mind The Buzzcocks and laughing till I can't breath. Its happened before. Seriously, watch it!

Aside from endless hours of social networking, magazines are a big part of my media identity. I will actually read any kind of magazine. But not those ones. You know which ones I'm talking about. Cosmo, Glamour, even the really kiddie ones like Shout and Bliss. And of course heat! Who doesn't love a bunch of mindless gossip every week? Not you? Oh well..

Why haven't I mentioned TV yet? Gossip Girl, Eastenders, Friends, I could go on.

And catching up on the latest episode of Waterloo Road on BBC iPlayer happens quite a lot.
I think thats it. Until next time...
